Like the successful "My Sassy
Girl," this movie is based on a series of funny stories from the
internet. Kim Ha Neul (from "Ditto" and "Romance")
plays Su-wan, a sophmore in college who works part-time as a tutor to
pay for her tuition. Kwon Sang Woo (from "Volcano High") plays
the intolerable Ji-hoon, a third-time high school senior who consistently
gets in trouble and into fights. In order to gain the favor of his father,
the former bad boy must improve his grades or else face his father's
wrath (who's pretty spry for an overweight man). Ji-hoon becomes an
unwilling student of Su-wan, who happens to be the same age as him.
Can Ji-hoon stay focus in his studies without being distracted from
all his female admirers? Can he stay out of trouble from the school
thugs who have a bone to pick with him?
I've been reading the reviews from
the internet and I'm surprised that My Tutor Friend is such a big hit
in Korea. I was wondering if I missed something when I watched the movie
in its entirety, suffice to say I was unimpressed. I didn't like either
of the lead actors nor did I find the story to be funny. The acting
seems forced and neither of the characters are loveable. There were
alot of supporting characters in My Tutor Friend which only added to
the movie's confusion. Alot was going on, but nothing really substantial
happened. The fight scenes were kind of cool to watch, but it's just
an added eye-candy for the male viewers like me to enjoy. The fighting
did add a little spice and humor to the show, but it wasn't enough to
save the movie from such an incredibly stupid plot, or what passes as
one nowadays.
I can't really review this movie
since I don't even know what's going on myself. Is it a comedy? A drama?
An action movie? I say none of the above. It's a film that's best be
avoided. However if you're fans of Kim Ha Neul and Kwon Sang Woo (which
I'm not), then perhaps you might want to rent My Tutor Friend first.
My Recommendation:
Avoid if you value your time.
