Korean Television Drama:
DAMO
(14 episodes)

THE STORY:
Damo stars Ha Ji Won as Chae-Ok, Lee Suh Jin
as Hwangbo Yoon, and Kim Min Joon as Jang Sung Baek.
According to ancient Korea, during the Chosun
Dynasty, there exists a profession for women called “Damo.”
The word Damo actually has a dual meaning. Women of this profession
usually function as tea servants and are regarded as the lowest class
of the hierchary. They are treated no better than the slaves in the
society and are ranked lower than a commoner. It is documented that
some of them function as undercover policewomen.
This wonderful series is about a Damo named Chae-Ok.
Born of nobility, Chae-Ok was cast off to slavery after her father (branded
as a traitor) committed suicide. While fleeing from the imperial guards,
Chae-Ok was separated from her brother and mother and was forced to
serve as a personal servant to young master Hwangbo Yoon. Like Chae-Ok,
Hwangbo Yoon also has his tragic origin. He was the son of a mistress
and a noble government official. His blood is too high to be considered
a commoner, and his status (due to mixed breeding) is too low to be
a higher nobleman. So he is neither treated as a nobleman nor a commoner.
His father decided to help Hwongbo Yoon become stronger and sent him
off to train martial arts under the tutelage of a highly skilled master.
Since Chae-Ok was assigned to Hwongbo Yoon, she too learned the art
of fighting.
The two ended in the Left Police Force where
Hwongbo Yoon is the commander and Chae-Ok is a damo working undercover
as a policewoman. While working on a counterfeit case, Chae-Ok meets
Jang Sung Baek, a skilled swordsman and the leader of a gang of bandits.
Chae-Ok finds herself drawn to Jang Sung Baek and is confused as to
where her loyalty lies. Her mission was to infiltrate the gang of bandits
and bring the rebels to justice but she couldn't bring herself to arrest
him when she had the opportunity to.
Similarly, Jang Sung Baek is drawn to Chae-Ok
and wants to convince her to join his side to overthrow the Emperor.
However it will be very difficult. Chae-Ok does not want to betray her
loyalty to Yoon and turn against the law for Jang Sung Baek, yet she
feels attached to Jang Sung Baek. Which side will Chae-Ok choose? Damo
is unlike any other drama I have seen as it deals with loyalty, honor,
politics, love, and betrayal.
What I like about the show:
Ha Ji Won. She's very pretty. While watching
the series with my friend, the first thing that came out of our mouths
was: Man, she's very cute! She's cute when she's scared, when she's
crying, when she's smiling, even when she's all bloody! She's a total
knock-out! She did a great job playing Chae-Ok as you can really get
a feel for her character. The storyline is very deep and the great thing
about it is that each subplots only add to the depth of the storyline
rather than drags like many of the Korean shows that I watched. I love
the action and the martial arts in this series. It's very fast paced
and I was never bored at all. What a wonderful show!
What I don't like about the show:
Not a single thing.
How do I rate this show?
